Ecodesign aims to make products more resource-efficient and reduce their environmental impact. Legal requirements for ecodesign have been established in the European single market for over two decades. Product information designed to promote more sustainable use has been in use for some time – sometimes in the form of details on a product’s resource consumption, such as energy or water, or as repair information. However, European Regulation 2024/1781 on ecodesign for sustainable products has significantly expanded the framework for ecodesign, introducing comprehensive information requirements and the so-called ‘digital product passport’. The presentation explains the legal framework for ecodesign within the European Single Market and the process by which product-specific and horizontal requirements are established, and what challenges will this pose for products and those responsible for technical communication.
